About the grant

What is the OZEV Workplace Charging Scheme for schools?

The OZEV Workplace Charging Scheme for State-Funded Education Institutions is a UK government grant covering up to 75% of the combined purchase and installation cost of EV chargepoints at eligible schools — up to £2,000 per socket and a maximum of 40 sockets per site.

For multi-academy trusts, a separate application can be submitted for each school within the trust, each eligible for its own allocation of up to 40 sockets.

The GOV.UK guidance recommends that schools arrange a site survey with an authorised installer before applying, to confirm the site’s electrical capacity can support the planned installation. DMS provides this survey free of charge with no obligation to proceed.

Eligibility at a glance

The process

How EV charging installation works for schools

DMS manages the process from initial survey through to grant claim.

1

Free site survey

We visit your school, assess electrical infrastructure, check parking suitability, and give you a clear picture of feasibility and costs. No charge, no obligation.

2

Grant application

Your school applies to OZEV for a grant voucher via GOV.UK. We provide your OZEV installer number and guide you through. Vouchers typically issued within 5 working days.

3

Installation

Our NICEIC-registered, OZEV-approved engineers carry out the installation. Work must be completed within 180 days of your voucher being issued.

3

Grant claimed

We submit the grant claim on your behalf and deduct it directly from your invoice. Your school pays only the remaining balance — typically around 25% of total cost.

Common questions

Connect the Classroom FAQs — eligibility, funding and next steps

State-funded schools, academies, free schools, colleges and pupil referral units in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are eligible. The grant covers up to 75% of costs, up to £2,000 per socket and a maximum of 40 sockets per site — giving a potential grant of up to £80,000 per school. Your school must have designated off-street parking. Independent schools are not eligible for this specific scheme.

Yes. Multi-academy trusts can submit a separate grant application for each school within the trust, each eligible for up to 40 sockets. A separate application is required per school, with contact details for both a trust-level and school-level representative on each application.

The GOV.UK guidance recommends getting an authorised installer to carry out a site survey before applying, to confirm the site’s electrical capacity can support the planned number of sockets. DMS provides this survey free of charge with no obligation to proceed.

The scheme has been extended until 31 March 2027, which GOV.UK describes as a final year. Once your grant voucher is issued it is valid for 180 days, within which the installation must be completed and the grant claimed. The government reserves the right to end the scheme earlier with 4 weeks’ notice.

Schools cannot receive the OZEV grant without using an authorised installer. The installer claims the grant on your behalf and deducts it from your invoice — meaning you only pay the balance. DMS is OZEV-approved and handles the entire claim process for you.
